RS4 smoke issues and dealer results

No, that’s one of the postiive things. The car feels great, pulls hard and as far as I know there are no other issues.

I’m tracking this closely and will report my findings in about a week. I am using a tiny bit but nothing like what I had described previously.

I didn’t when we put new heads on. I inspected them with the tech. Looked pristine.

No compression issues based on the test I did (which was really to verify what the dealer had told me…and it did.) I was skeptical because they didn’t give me a print out or any proof of the test and I had to ask what the results were.

No smoke on cold start. Only the normal condensation vapor is present when it is cold outside. Very light see through like smoke (like fog) you see on every car on cold mornings or after work in the evenings. I’ll take a vid today, kind of cold here and I haven’t started my car yet. I’ll post it up later today so you can see.

Good questions Saki, keep them coming.

Appreciate it and I AGREE! I know someone here will help me get to the bottom of it.

I am stubborn lol, I don’t have a stellar dealership to work with near me so I’m determined to at least narrow down the potential culprits before going to a different dealership. I have an appointment set for next week, I couldn’t fit one on this week.

Cold start vid - no blue smoke, just condensation:

nice. That exhaust is ANGRY!

this also is a great way to show the crazy high 1600 RPM cold start idle we were talking about in the other thread.

haha, thanks. It does sound mean at times.

Yes, although for the current temps around here the cold start on my car is at 1,400 RPM. I haven’t seen 1,600 yet but maybe in the dead of winter it will climb a bit higher. not sure if that RPM is pre-set by the ECU or not. It does seem to vary though based on ambient temps.

interesting.

I get this every day.

Update 11-3-11:

I did the world’s best Rube Goldberg job affixing the valve cover breathers. Pics are a little further down the post.

So I chickened out about half way through the test for two reasons. The first being the idle was very erratic as expected and at stop signs or traffic lights I’d be just short of stalling. The second and main reason is it triggered a flashing CEL. Which did go away after I’d start driving again. Came back a second time at a traffic light, then went away again. What I do want to mention is during the short test (roughly 3-4 miles) I actually didn’t notice any smoke. Now, I don’t know if it solved the issue (meaning, it’s pointing to a faulty PCV component), I tried my best to look for the smoke but it was night time so I can’t be 100% positive. I may try this again during day light hours so I can be sure. My concern is this procedure triggers a shit ton of fault codes. I have a list and will post them in the next post - it is a long list.

I checked the long term fuel trim codes immediately after the test. See results below:

http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz269/NY07RS4/2007%20Audi%20RS4/bank2.jpg

http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz269/NY07RS4/2007%20Audi%20RS4/bank1.jpg

Kind of crazy results for Bank 1. Again, this was after the test which triggered faults etc.

I also did some logs after I put the car back to normal. If someone can show me how to put an excel sheet on here I’ll do it. The results of the logs were ok as far as I can tell. I measured quite a few blocks and nothing seemed out of place. I’ll re-check the LTFT on Sat to see if they return to a normal range after driving with everything in it’s normal position. Or I can delete all the coodes and erase the LTFT to start over and see what comes up.

As promised here are the Rube Goldberg pics:

lol rube goldberg

hey, the best way to post up an excel sheet if you want others to access it is googledocs

personally for ‘show and tell’ I just take a screen shot and post that. Like the quarter mile list…it’s just a screen cap of an excel sheet.

I do that with logs.

Fuck, that looks tiny^. I’ll work on making it bigger later.

it’s this site…it shrinks images.

That’s why I include a link to the image just above it.

We need GOD to adjust the way images are displayed. I like the way older VB forums do it, where it shows say ‘1024x768’ and it you click the header of the image, it expands it full size. For whatever reason this site maxes out at 640 pixels in width…which doesn’t really work (still too small). I think he changed it though because it used to be 480 pixels width maximum. 1000+ is required, especially since pretty much every monitor on earth is now 1024 pixels or more in width. My mac at home is something like 1800

Anyone here go to church?

The bottom right corner of my screen has a zoom function…I can make the site 125% or 150% which makes the images normal size. I guess that is a quick work around for now.

what browser is that? I don’t see that for myself.

I have an older version of IE at work and the zoom feature is on the bottom right. At home I have IE 9 and you can find the zoom function if you click the gear on the top right and click zoom.

IE8

Potential failed PCV parts: Non return valve & Crankcase breather system

Theory - after discussing this with two other techs (Indy shop near my house) they are both adament it sounds like the culprit has to the PCV system. The issue always arises when there is a change in vacuum (postive for a while then negative for 30 seconds or more and the minute it goes back to positive the oil dumps). I’m wondering if one of the two parts listed above, in particular the non return valve, is not functioning correctly, would it cause the issue I’m experiencing.

Anyone have access to ETKA or similar where I can see an exploded view? Or better yet, anyone have an acutal shot of the back of an RS4 motor with these parts installed? The diagram above helps but it is on the back of a Q7 4.2 FSI comfort motor. I really want to see the exact path and layout of all of the PCV system’s parts relative to my motor. It may be an exact match, I just don’t for for sure.

I can swap these two remaining parts with new ones myself to further test my theory. This is what I’d like to do prior to dropping off my car at a new dealership and having them attempt to diagnose it.

Pretty sure there is a guy on QW that has access to ETKA. You may have posted a similar thread to this one there? Im sure if you ask, he will chime in. Unfortunately I forgot his handle? Something with the word “dog” in it I believe?

MTNdog?
