RS4 smoke issues and dealer results

Nah I was thinking uncorked JHM supercharger would do the trick…

I’d rather see one of them go to JHM, rather than UR or Heiffer. Both of these companies seem a little sketch.

Would be real interesting to see what that Vortech JHM kit would do.

stock quarter mile times are hard to find for the R8.

First, there’s no justincredible or sakimano maintaining a list for them, so it’s basically ‘I heard so and so ran such and such’.
Second, the times on dragtimes.com are 90% not real quarter mile times. If you see a time on there, and they don’t have the 60 foot and 1/8th and track location…then notice they have quarter mile ET/MPH as well as 0-60 or 0-100 mph times in the notes section, you know they were on a country road with a GTECH or PBOX, so those times are useless. They could time themselves on a sharp downhilll in order to look cool.

So, bottom line the only legit R8 4.2 quarter mile times I found were:

CD 12.61 @ 113.5 on dragtimes, Milan Dragway in Detroi…although I didn’t see a timeslip.
http://www.dragtimes.com/Audi-R8-Timeslip-20297.html

Marcus F 13.00 @ 107.3 (although this had a modded intake…and it appears he was trying to sell an EVOMS intake saying it cut 0.4 seconds off his ‘stock’ time of 13.4@105.3 lol
http://www.dragtimes.com/Audi-R8-Timeslip-18750.html

The rest? They’re all frigging gtech and pbox benchracers. Those are fun devices, but you don’t post them on dragtimes.com or claim them as ‘real’ times.

There’s also the magazines etc. , none of which go to a dragstrip. Rather, they test on a runway or the straight of a racetrack using a pbox, and they also correct for weather somehow.

Edmunds 12.8 @ 110.2
MotorTrend 13.1 @ 108.9
Road & Track 12.7 @ 111.0
Road & Track again 12.9 @ 113
Car and Driver 12.6 @ 113

Someone start a thread on Audizine and r8talk asking for the fastest stock and modded R8 quarter mile times. Would be interesting to see.

I love to see the 4.2 get the JHM s/c & built treatment, obviously doubt it will happen, but that’d be some great publicity for JHM to really get their name out there in the mainstream market. Everyone knows JHM in the AZ 4.2 section etc, but you get out of the few model lines JHM does, or even into another platform, and people have no clue who you’re talking about. I know JHM is still pretty darn young and already have more then they could ever want on their plate, but it’d be a great publicity move once the new shop is all done and production for the various platforms are more stabilized, rather then heavy R&D.

Also, while I agree about Heffner’s past & reputation, it seems what I’ve heard of UR, as of current, has been pretty upstanding. Their story of origin is still pretty nuts, and how they got the technical knowhow to be doing what their doing is flat out impressive (building R8 motors, Lambo motors, 430 motor, etc, esp after seeing the issues JHM is fighting against the S4 motor being built). There are 2 or more UR lambo’s around here, one guy got his last fall on a new gallardo he purchased, he got it back and about a month later reported to UR that he was having some clutch problems, they flew two techs out, pulled the clutch, inspected everything, repaired/replaced any issues to get him right, and left, all part of the 2yr warranty after the build. I thought that was pretty legit (obviously you pay a pretty penny for a kit like that, just sharing his story).

I’m all about compromise:

4.2 = JHM blower to full potential.
5.2 = UR turbo kit.

You can’t stop smiling either way so its a win win.

BTW - UR had a 1200WHP Lambo @ a private cocktail event at a Manahattan dealership recently. It had 4 go-pro cameras set-up so I’m assuming we should be seeing some great footage in the very near future. Heard they went to an industrial area in NJ and had some “fun.”

Yeah…great guys lol

^hahah, I should know better then to stick my foot in my mouth when Saki is on the case. Alright alright.

Sorry your thread when off topic ny07 but it’s a good discussion.

I guess the only Audi scene I’ve been exposed to is the b6/7 s4 one. I find the lack of openly available, independently verifiable performance information for the other Audi platforms frustrating whether it’s b5 s4, r8 or 3.0 b6. Look at the gong show going on in the b8 world.

It may seemingly cost more for V8 go faster mods but at least we know what works.

True or not regarding UR, I wouldn’t use that one single article to make a decision about their work…just say’n. Imagine what people think about JHM when they come across ngng’s site. You can’t always believe what you read on the interwebz~~!

hahahaha just found ngng’s site (I’m assuming) Pretty funny read.

we’ll have to agree to disagree…ngng bitches about blown clutches (while hosting videos of him destroying clutches on youtube). Nobody lends him any credibility. As for ngng’s site, that’s one person’s side, with 3 or 4 stories about customers bitching that stuff broke (out of 100s if not 1000s of products sold). Every business goes through that and everyone knows there is always the other side which is not presented on ngng’s site (if he would post the links, he’d see that the situations were all resolved). When JHM gets the opportunity to present their side on the forums, things go well and you see the reality of the situation…thus he doesn’t link them. Nobody’s shortsighted enough to take his site as gospel when forming an opinion of JHM, and if they are, so be it.

UR didn’t have a product break and have a customer complain (well…they did). Rather, they thought it would be wise, in writing, to address a customer who raised a complaint by threatening to destroy his marriage using improperly obtained footage without the customer’s consent (google the penalties for recording someone…it falls under wiretapping laws). That’s just fucking ridiculous. They lost a lot of credibility there. Basically they’re douchebags. Fast cars though.

I agree with you (if this story is true) regarding a loss of credibility from a human/ethics standpoint. If the article is true then I’d say exactly what you said, “…fucking ridiculous.” No argument from me on that aspect if the story is true.

NGNG - My example was more towards this scenario: someone who doesn’t frequent the forums but sees a JHM sticker on an S4 and googles them. That sucks because they may lend credibility to his site. Either way, I understand what you wrote and can see where you’re coming from.

My point was even scumbags can have be geniuses. Translation, maybe the owner is a total d-bag bottom of the barrel loser but has huge amounts of talent on tap when it comes to his product development and manufacturing - OR, even though he’s a scumbag his staff might be stellar techs/tuners/engineers/customer service reps/builders/designers etc. As long as they back their products and their products perform I could care less if the “boss” is an asshole, as long as I don’t have to deal with him directly. There are assholes everywhere, as long as I get what I expected and paid for I’m ok.

I love certain software packages I purchased for my business, I have no clue if the guy who developed them is beating old women on the weekends.

I don’t know them (UR) from a hole in the wall. I’ve only read some mag articles, seen two cars in person and visited their site a few times to watch vids. They might suck - I really don’t know for sure. What I’ve seen so far has been pretty exciting and some customer feedback (w/o UR employees present at the time) from one guy at a car meet was pretty awesome. He loves his lambo and so far…hasn’t had any issues.

Not all that important to me in the grand scheme of things as I’m not in a position to order one of their packages at the moment. Hopefully they are a legit quality option for others. ALways exciting to hear about big power and reliable options.

Spoke…too…soon…

MF’R! Smoke is back with a vengeance, dealer appt with AOA tech person/consultant/whatever you call him is being set-up. My CSR said he’s pretty sure they are going to replace it since they’ve thrown every part at it they could think of and still haven’t a clue as to what the issue is. For those wondering if I went to another dealar I did - the experience was so painful that I came back to my local dealer.

350+ miles I’ve driven since having the car returned to me with the last two PCV parts replaced, no smoke present ever during that time. I checked religiously. I also check the oil level, never moved at all. Today on the way back from lunch with my wife I saw the smoke again and almost had a heart attack. I’ve been checking for the smoke every single time I leave a traffic light just like I used to: while sitting at a traffic light at idle, once I accelerate away in 1st the smoke pours out. Today at that light, as soon as the light turned green and I took off I saw it and so did the surrounding neighborhood I’d bet. Spy Hunter like, no joke. It’s like someone took a half a qt of oil and poured it into my I/M or combustion chamber. And just like before, as soon as I’m off the throttle, change to second gear and back on the throttle there is zero smoke. The vacuum change between on and off throttle must play a role like we had speculated. Whatever amount of oil builds up during idle I assume is blown out once I step on the gas in 1st gear.

I can actually feel the car stumble a bit like the rpm’s pause for just a moment before continuing to climb as I press the pedal further down while in 1st gear. The gas pedal gives me just a hint of resistance right before the smoke leaves the exhaust too, it’s like a “heads up look now and watch as your smoke covers the line of cars behind you in a cloud” warning system. How fugg’n strange is that???

I really believed the car was fixed this last time because everyother time I had my car returned to me the issue would present itself within 10 miles of the dealership max. I drove the car something like 115 miles the day I got it back and was so excited that there wasn’t a hint of any smoke present at all. Then I checked the next morning at start up, nothing but condensation. I was confident at this point. No issues until today…, how freaking weird and frustrating is this damn issue I’m experiencing?!

^man. . . so sorry to hear, but getting a new motor isn’t too shabby! It seems that’s the way to go these days, I wouldn’t mind a fresh motor in my car, that’s for sure.

See if you can buy the busted motor back, I know JMH wants to source a RS4 motor or two so they can start tearing into and figure out what it can handle exactly. Know it’s not likely, but all they can do is say no I guess.

Im very sorry I was really excited to see you had this resolved.

Damn that sucks. Now you’re going to have to deal with smoke for another couple weeks while waiting for an engine, then it’ll be down for another week or so while they replace it.

At least you’re in warranty. Buy an extended while you’re at it and still ‘in warranty’.

Thanks. Yeah I agree, just a hassle to go through.

I plan to if they allow/offer it. We’ll see.

Thx man, I was pretty pumped myself! lol.

The only positive to this situation is the loaner. My dealership is pretty good about that. When I drop my car off this week they give me a loaner. If/when they decide it needs a motor I keep the loaner the entire time until the job is done. THankfully, I only have to deal with the smoke a few days this week - to sure yet which day I’m dropping the car off, they haven’t called me yet.

I have an extended warranty - the Platinum version. Very happy I decided to go with one, otherwise I’d be laying out a chunk of cash right now.

I’ll report back once I find something out. I’m hoping this AOA rep tech guy coming in diagnosis it quickly so I’m not stuck in a loaner for months.

hopefully he doesn’t ask why your ECU was flashed 3 or 4 times…
