I remember reading that they would “cross that bridge when they got to the S5.” I don’t really see much of a gain from custom headers on the RS4s but it wouldn’t hurt to ask if they tried it.
That was a quote I think from Keaton before he disappeared. People had asked about headers for the RS4 and JHM said that they would consider it when they start on the S5s. I personally don’t see much of a gain from custom headers on the RS4s but it would be interesting to try.
It was not just auto correct but Apple’s IPhone auto correct which is much worse. I swear when I can upgrade then I am going back to something by Android.
How annoying is that? They have the cats way the fuck up there as part of the manifold…basically making ‘piggies’ which were a DIYable mod on past models, an engine pull $2000 palaver on this car.
Wow so they do have shorty headers, very interesting. It sucks that the RS5s are like the V10 S6/S8s though in that you have to pull the engine to go fully catless.
So next question is where does the extra 30 HP lie in the B8 RS cars? Tune? Cylinder head?
iirc APR ran a stock time of 12.4 in a stock RS5 in the heat. Compare with mistro 12.4 in the cold and 2000s4 12 w. Where’s the extra power from and can it be applied to the rs4?
And vice versa. The RS4 can’t do a 12.4 stock. Is it all due to the dsg tranny? The rs4 has better flowing headers, so where is the extra hp from the rs5 coming? Questions… questions…
I would like to know as well… Dual intakes/tb? Better flow numbers for the heads? Tuning? Based on pics it’s not the exhaust… No doubt a good amount 1/4 et wise comes from the dsg, look at the b8 s4 dsg v 6speed…
Saki ran 12.75 and apr ran 12.43. Conditions were better for saki, so probably .4 delta… .25+ is from the tranny IMO…
The RS4 was in great DA. The RS5 - not so much. I reckon head to head it would be a bigger delta. I would love to see them actually line up, same time, same place. Fancy a trip up to Canada, Arin?
What is also interesting is the gain of 0.2s from the RS5 APR tune. AFAIK, the JHM RS4 tune is designed to be used with exhaust modifications.
I forgot about the DSG factor. I wonder if RS5 owners have seen any of the issues some 3.0t drivers saw with tuned cars and hesitation at gear changes. I wonder if the DSG in the RS5 is any different to that in the B8 S4.
Stephan Reil, R&D chief in charge of all Audi RS and R models, explains:
The engine for the RS5 was practically developed from scratch. It develops more power and torque than the outgoing unit, yet it uses twenty percent less fuel. Although the redline was pushed up to 8500 rpm, maximum torque, an identical 317 lb-ft is now available between a less hectic 4000 and 6000 rpm. Engineering highlights include a two-mode intake manifold with tumble blades, variable intake and exhaust timing, and a multimode exhaust system. To trim parasitic losses, Audi reduced piston friction, lightened the DOHC valvetrain, and fitted a variable-output oil pump. A regenerative braking system increases alternator output during deceleration and reduces its output during normal driving.
Also its cylinder heads are off of the gallardo ;D
Going to be very interesting seeing this engine develop over the years with various tuners. Im not sure what kind of flow the TVS 1900 is capable hp-wise but i bet the TVS-2300 would be a better fit
sad thing is Bigserve that many tuners wont even touch the thing because it is NA and think that it is the same thing as the last 4.2 in the rs4 even though it is not. the rs5 4.2 im sure could be a wonderful powerplant in the hands of a real tuner but until rs5’s start dipping to 40 and under, we wont even see much from JHM either. real shame, the potential is there. the v8 m3’s make great power from boost and this should not be any expection. i just wish audi sold more cars that way more tuners would look our way. more competition equals better, cheaper products.
