S4 sees track time! Road course mini review

funny, he has a gigantic wing and a roll cage…and is on stock wheels? WTF

Road race superstars are comical.

Nice to see you posting here! I think road courses are 60% driver, 20% car, 20% tires, with straightaways obviously turning the tables. I’ve run with a few 325i’s that were quicker than me for a large majority of the track.

Regarding brakes, I found a before/after shot of my car from the bmw photoshoot here http://www.windycitybmw.com/photo.aspx?aid=941. You can see they were nice and red here

but then after hammering them, more maroon at the end.

I confirmed it’s not brake dust :-\ I also ate through about 60-70% of one of my xp20 pads. I’m gonna turn off all the nannies next time and see if that helps reduce the amount of brake wear/tear. I usually just disable the first level of ESC. I had the pads visibly smoking in the paddock.

Next track day is at mid-ohio with PCA in little over a month, which is a really light track on brakes.

@Drob seems like track talk is more popular here! lol

I usually track with just ASR off, which is the first level as you said. For big tracks like mosport, I find it’s fine, but at a small track like Shannonville, It’s a lot more intrustsive, and I will start going full off and learn it. I find my car over steers much easier with full traction off, maybe I am going to the corners too hot like Shaun is saying. I agree that it’s mostly driver. I only started tracking since 2011, and I am pretty happy with my progress thus far. I plan to go to DE days next year.

Anyway, here’s my video from Shannonville, my fastest lap 2:06.8

And here’s my fastest lap thus far at Mosport, 1:39.97

akatsuki!!!
Ahahaha. I saw some of your posts on AZ. I’m not a fan of that board so I jumped here. This community seems much more technical. Good to you know you post here too XD

drop23 - that mustang is aweeeeesome. It even has boss stockers. Must’ve been fast. That car still has been the most neutral factory car I’ve had the chance to drive. It was just remarkable on corner entry.

sakimano - actually the wheels on the mustang are not factory. Seeing that he still looks to have a lot of interior + that car setup, he may be racing in american iron…which limits total vehicle weight and tire width. All modern Mustangs essentially go with no power mods in that series (bc they limit it by lbs per hp). That wheel he’s rocking is a popular road course wheel for Mustangs.

Sorry about the misunderstanding of akasuki’s brake fluid. Guess it didn’t boil - just began to get fluid fade.
He has improved a tonnnnnn. Only 1 year ago, he was doing 2:09ish on the same track. To shave that much time in 1 season is insane.

The S4 remains to be the most impressive fat pig I’ve driven on the track to date

you live near Windsor and went to Shannonville? Wow that’s commitment.

Lol you’re too generous Shaun, thanks for the feed back. I can’t lose to you at mosport either! >:(

@ saki, we are both from toronto, so Shannonville is about a 1.5 to 2 hr drive… I am going again tomorrow!

Looking forward to hear about your lap time improvements
Don’t touch the gas until you are going to unwind the steering wheel, and with that alone you’ll find some time!

Drive past mosport last week when something was on… unfortunately I had a vomiting 2yo in the back lol

So yesterday… using almost bald michelin ps2s… i managed 2:05.94 with a solo lap timer… 2:05.58 on my phone racer chrono app. Not sure which one is the most accurate, but looks like i got a second off my time with boro92’s tips

Whoops. Posted the wrong lap timer picture. Heres the right one

That looks like some really cool kit. Mind posting some details? I especially like the map overlay.

YES!
INTO THE 2:05s!!!

drob23 - the app is racechrono. Free on android. They also have a pro version with video overlay and other functions.
The lap timing device that Marco also used was an AIM solo

Thanks shaun

Drob its free like boro92 said. Give it a try. Track addict is good if u use iphone

Sweet, will do, thanks gents!

umm, 3 track days and my tires are toast.
I have rotated tires after each track day…is that normal?

How many lapping days are you guys getting out of your tires?
I should have snapped some pics (maybe I will tonight when I bleed the brakes). Some parts are past the wear bar, other sections have melted and become 1 piece… other areas that used to have tread pattern have now since become slick. This is definitely a record for me! I know front camber will fix this (the car eats front tires in stock config and alignment). But surely, you guys are getting a lot more track days out of them?

My car is brand new (3000km). Tires already done XD
I know Marco has had his tires for at least 1 full season!!!

What tires did you have (using past tense lol)?

You running on stock tires? Do you mean 3 DE’s or 3 days total? I have 7 total days on my pss tires + 4k street miles. My sidewall is getting bare but I’m still fine at the bottom. Gonna dial in about .5 deg more camber though before my next event

My stock contis wore down half way on my first time to shannonville…

Stock rubber - Continental sport contact 3.
I know they are supposed to last long as street tires…but wow! 3 lapping days? Camaaan!

oh ok, i guess it’s normal then XD

Drob23 - 7 track days and 4k street miles? WTF i dont think i ever got that far on a set of tires

How much camber are you running up front? I’m honestly looking to max out the spc camber arm adjustment for the front, but bc i’m at stock height, i probably won’t have that much anyway. I’m hopeful for -2.5
