I’m with Justin- I was hoping to see some results from you and/or Ron- I know Ron has been running because he mentioned on FB he was trapping 123+ at +1200 DA in his last outing.
LOL I know. While Im not super excited about the 3.0T as I love the NA audis. it is always fun to see who is up at the end of the year.
With the GIAC dual pulley and the APR dual pulley and the new AMEX shifting and TCU worked out you have to wonder who was able to really get the best of it this year. My money is on APR and Ron but it would be interesting to see how GIAC fairs and if they are still able to hold onto the record.
I’ve been testing the file for the last month or so for the B8.5 Simos, I don’t have great times yet as the prior 2 revisions had non-linear boost/throttle gains that it made launching quite difficult, IIRC my best was a 11.467 and my best trap was 120.xx in D/A’s near 900-1000ft. These past 2 revision files just was not all there: either resulting in bog at launch, a laggy launch, too much wheelspin, or strange upshift behaviors at WOT (think powershifting in a manual tranny), it wasn’t consistent.
The original 2 revisions they sent me were based on the B8 dual-pulley file; it just wasn’t cutting it for me, everything was pumped to X10 for no apparent reason. That file was based on feedback from 2 or 3 beta testers from last year when GIAC was actually testing a dual-pulley file, lost their in-house test vehicle, and never continued development of it until Logan was able to get a hold of me. To me, it made for sloppy track performance and some overly aggressive part-throttle behavior. They essentially went back to the drawing board with the B8.5, I’m not sure if they will take my feedback and make this file accessible for B8 guys too though…but who knows?
This 3rd revision was uploaded yesterday afternoon and feels exactly like a stage II “+” file should feel like; very civil and refined, no weird behaviors, everything feels stage II - like but slightly amplified due to the increase boost, and holds the bypass closed at WOT. To be honest, it feels like when I had my stage II + CW in all aspects (A great thing!) except now the upshifts are butter smooth / no hesitations at all throttle angles, exactly how I need it to be, and with all safety items intact.
I will be at the track tonight (D/A’s will be 1000-1200ft) to see if I can get used to the slightly different throttle response for launching it using the primetime method. I know my times wont’ be great, but the only way I know it’ll launch effectively is to take it to a track environment. Sunday mid-morning will have D/A’s closer to 400-600f t for me to make better passes so long as it can be launched fine.
I’ll report back either way, but I don’t expect my times to be as great as Ron’s as he’s running a larger crank than my 183mm, has the advantage of that throttle body, and that awesome AMAX TCU feature.
quick update, managed a few runs tonight, mainly to get a feel for using the primetime/upswing launch method on this file. Able to execute it almost perfectly, the 1.58 60ft time should improve over time…
first run 11.45@119.20 (1,0xx D/A), 1.61 60ft
second run 11.34@120.00 (900-ish D/A), 1.58 60ft
My timing was great first and second gears, but then dropped off to pump file levels in 3rd and 4th gears. I think my e85/93 mix needs some work, which I will play with today and tomorrow. My delta on my 11.34 run in the back half was 24.75mph, much lower than the normal 26-27mph, to give you an idea of how much the timing dropped.
Additionally, the boost was bleeding between 5-7% in 1st gear after about 6,400 rpm, which didn’t affect my 60’ft, but in comparison to another run earlier this year (11.29 run), the two swapped places sometime between the 60’ and 330’ mark.
More work needed on my end for fuel, logs sent to GIAC to hopefully reduce/eliminate that 1st gear bypass.
The lines were long (pre-FIXXFEST test-n-tune), the wait times between runs were long as cars spilled fluids multiple times during the evening. Never a recipe for stellar times, but I’ll chip away at it as tracks are opened throughout the entire winter season, and attendance drops normally in January and Feb, which oddly is the coldest months so you’d think it would be the opposite.
on this tank, I did not get an opportunity to measure the ethanol content (different pump than my usual pump). Logs initially looked good though (3rd gear runs), but this tank doesn’t hold over the long run as when I use my usual station.
I calculate my mix always based on 85% ethanol, 10% for pump for a “37.7%” mix, regardless of it’s less. The variance usually works out with clean logs, but I think this time may be slightly lower than my usual mix in terms of ethanol content…
do you use an ethanol analyzer? reason I’m asking is we’ve recently gotten E at a local station near me and I’m using about a 3.5-4gal of E at each fill up. The pump @ the station says their flex-fuel is between E51-E83 so I’m not exactly sure what the true ethanol content is.
Hi guys, same story long lines, long wait times, cars spraying fluids and even ice on the track.
Between run #1 and run #2, I waited approx 2.5hrs, tires getting cold. But at least the temps were near 70F by run #2 so that heated the track surface enough
My trap is low for that ET (and my ET could stand to be better as well). I’m still bleeding up to 9% at the top of first gear, up to 7% at the top of 3rd gear, and the majority of 4th gear boost bleed ranged from 0-7% once again. It put a damper on my time-to-distance for sure, as well as some mph. D/A approx. 600
My 60ft and 330ft times are better than when I ran my 11.24 second run, despite the up to 9% bleed. When I was testing the file, it was warmer out. Yesterdays combination of high barametric pressures and low humidity was wonderful for boost, if it would have held the boost.
Happy with the results nonetheless, more to come as I have a few opportunities in Dec, and again throughout the winter months.
I ran an 11.241@122.21mph tonight. By-pass was nice and shut, but ran into some timing corrections on cyl #4 in the middle of 3rd gear through the rest of the run (up to -4* of correction). I’ll have to investigate and see if the gap is off on that cyl. I may just need to go 104/E85 instead of my E85/93 mix that I still can’t seem to get right compared to when I had my smaller 179mm crank.
The car still does a strange two-step upshift on the 3-4 shift, shows up on VCDS logs as well and costing me some time/mph as well. It doesn’t always happen, but creeps up when traps get higher and higher. GIAC may need to revamp the TCU tune for DP cars.
Nice job Loe! Car is moving out well and based on the logs looks like GIAC has a solution with no bypass and good timing values. Little pull you got which surprises me given the nice IAT’s. Dragtimes shows DA around 250-275 so awesome conditions. Agree with your comments and Vendorzine and I’ve been saying for years these cars love high BP’s and low humitidity. Thanks for taking the video! That cammera now filmed the two fastest stock blower cars… lol Keep in up and I’ll be chasing you in the spring…
you know my opinion on dragtimes D/As lol (based on the nearest airport conditions). But I understand the reasoning behind using it because of the consistency vs. a GPS app
Thanks again for the gopro! I think I’ll pick one up as well in spring prior to returning it, awesome to have!
Loe, Yeah agree on dragtimes, wasn’t trying to discredit the awesome run… I experience the same things at Thompson as I have an ap and portable weather station that can vary by a hundred+ feet but since everyone can use DT’s I usually post those numbers. Also, your results are more proof that HFC’s don’t do much… Sure they’re helping over your old ones sinc they were in bad shape but I bet you’d have run about the same time with new stock cats… Thoughts?
agreed, the HFC ain’t doing jack lol over OEM cats that are in excellent shape. I’m going to update that in the vendorzine thread as I totally forgot that I had the JHM cats.
Some interesting dialogue on vendorzine in regards to comparing Loe’s and my times. I think most are forgetting to consider the gearing difference between the B8 and B8.5. This is a big part as of why Loe’s car traps much better mph in the 1/8th with only a slightly better et. and worse 60ft. Really shows how much a shift impacts things… He’s certainly setup as the better 1/8th mile car gearing wise… 1st gear is the only one with the same ratio so 60’s are a good comparison… I do have the shitty version of the tranny though… lol
Compared your logs to a few of mine and you’re making 1-2ish degrees more timing across the pass… Found a few where my car does better in 1st gear timing wise, which makes sense given you didn’t cut the best 60 that pass… Wonder how are intake air/mass values and boost values compare
Ron great points on the 1/8mile trap, I’m right near the 3-4 upshift at the 1/8mile mark. I think you are near the 4-5 upshift near the end of the 1/4mile where im at about 6300rpm right?
^^ the above is based on C&D using a standard 18" 245/40/18 tires though, with an O/D of 25.21". I have 19" wheels on 255/35/19 with an O/D of 26.03", using this calculator, and shows a difference of 1.195%: http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12
My up-shift points are 7,000 rpm unfortunately according to VCDS (but it may magically go to 7,100rpm on some VCDS logs, like when I trapped above 97 mph on the run in question), so my shift points are as follows using 7,100rpm:
Good stuff Loe! You’re spot on and that’s what I was getting at, sorry been busy so didn’t lay it out quite as well as you… We got about 3 feet of snow so been digging out… lol Couldn’t even get into my A4 it was half way up the door… Shoveled the door out, jumped in and it pulled right out! Quattoro and snow tires ftw… lol
Here are the gear ratios for both cars if you’d like to determine the points on the B8. I had done it at some point but can’t seem to find the file…
Also, my car shifts at 7400 on the 1-2, 7200 on the 2-3, 7200 on the 3-4, and 7400 on the 4-5. Did this to prevent the car from going into 5th before the end of the 1/4. If I remember I’m good to around 126mph before worrying about shifting.
