The 3.0 movement

Does anyone know why the PES kit grenaded the engine?

My engine is half pulled apart, so if you guys want to see any particular pics please let me know and I will post them in the engine pic thread

BTW, I will be send a Tiptronic ECU and TCU to JHM soon

Nothing wrong with the kit itself, the parts haven’t had a problem with failing… just a poor tune. The kit works fine as long as its a healthy engine and gets a good tune, I think most people either had to use a certain tune or go custom… I’m sure there’s a lot of people who have it but dont go on forums, just like anything… Regardless, the kit is pretty limited, the blower they use is pretty much maxed out on performance potential. Unless you have some money to invest I’d steer clear of it, not worth the associated costs and risks that come with it.

^pretty much summed it up there, the M62 isn’t the best choice for the 3.0 so the kit is handicapped

errmmm, I don’t think it’s quite as cut & dry as that. I think VF & possibly PES also forgot to look at some other aspects of the kits and produced issues that weren’t brought to light very much. From talking to JHM, and all the experience they had with NGNG’s car in the shop, they were pretty shocked by some aspects of the F.I. system that was overlooked, and the longevity of some parts.

If it were me, I wouldn’t even install a PES/VF kit on the car if it was free (if you were planning on keeping the car for a good while longer at least). If they made such dramatic shortcuts in the actual blower selection and tuning of the “final” product, how much real thought went into improving other systems as well. . . Just my thoughts. Maybe it was just first run kits that showed some of the problems the worst, but still, some thoughts to chew on about the quality in the details.

If you follow PES back far enough you will see they have been blowing up slow cars for a long time.

They came out with the 1.8T big turbo kit and blew motors back then. Then had issues with every platform they got into.

I would wager to say that the PES 3.0 cars have no different issues then the 4.2 cars. There were few people that actually bought into the PES hype and got there supercharger for the 4.2. Some of the guys that did get the kit had coolant leak into the cylinders and due to the fact that water doesn’t compress so well. BOOM blown motor. Do I know this is the issue with the 3.0 cars no.

Some motors stock will fail. Adding a supercharger to a motor that isn’t healthy isn’t a great idea. I don’t know how many 3.0 kits PES sold but Im thinking other then there $hit tune and bad design the motor that blew might have been just a case of something letting go. If there is more then one guy that had a blown motor then that might be time to look further. I know PES did a lot of work to try and keep the few guys quiet that had failures on there 4.2 So in the end who knows how many failures they had.

Thats interesting, so it appears that it just boils down to poor development, choice of parts and lack of support.

With this knowledge of what went wrong with other programs, we can adjust how we go about this improving this platform. I think we need to forget about supercharging our cars for the time being and develop NA parts

Tune
Headers/Extractors
Piggies/Downpipes
Cat back exhaust -Fast Intentions would be nice
Intake Manifold modification
Intake Manifold spacers
Lightweight pulleys i.e. crank, power steering etc
Ram air intake

There was mention of cams, but I am a little doubtful about how well they would do. There were a couple of people who ran the Shrick cams on the 4.2 and really didnt notice any real difference. Would cams only make a difference if we went forced induction? or once we see more flow through the engine would the benifits be more noticeable

good list of parts. As far as cams, everything I’ve heard suggests that N/A on stock porting the cams won’t do anything… now with ported/built heads they may help, and with FI a set of cams with less overlap would help (cams built for FI)… but its my opinion that the money for cams/built heads would be better spent on a blower if it were one or the other.

I have to agree. The best thing to do is to take it one step at a time.

Get a idea on what the restrictions are and then go from there. Doing cams is not going to help if the manifolds are too small and a intake manifold is useless if the the throttle body is too small etc etc…

Just thought I would let you know…

I pulled my ECU and TCU today and will organise for it to be shipped to JHM this week. ;D ;D ;D

Lout,

IF you can PLEASE either take a few pictures of removal of the ECU & TCU or take a quick video and post it here. This will help future guys with these removals

TCU removal: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng38.shtml

I found my TCU underneath the ECU (would someone be able to provide the TCU part number so I can confirm if I have really taken it out)

Those DIY’s are very helpful, the only hard part is actually coaxing the wipers amd the plastic tray at the bottom of the windscreen.

With the wipers you have to move them about until you break the grip of the splines, and it is the same thing with the plastic tray. Just be patient with it and little bit of force.

This is where I was under the impression the B6 A4’s had there TCU. It shows up on the part guide as just below your ECU. So this should be exactly what your looking for.

Hello.

My name is Elvis, and I come from Audizine. I started the movement on that forum about the 3.0’s and JHM. Now, I’ve joined this forum to show support, and keep this movement going. My goal is to expand this platform as much as possible with the help of JHM.

You came to the right place. Bring friends and all the questions you can handle. Its clear this site has more info about the 3.0 in just a few months then all the other sites have in the past few years.

It’s been very encouraging talking to a few local Audi mechanics, being able to discuss a lot of what I’ve picked up from this forum has yielded some good conversations. When I first started looking into this local places would just say the PES supercharger or an exhaust and chip.

Now that I can discuss it on a more intelligent level I got the same general response from everyone. There should be a ton of power in the platform, the light aluminum block is a big advantage for swinging the front end around corners in a higher powered car, dual VVT is an awesome technology, and the out of the box power advantage over the 1.8T variants. One guy was saying a lot of the tuning advantages of our engine are found in some of fords engines, as well as the new nissan skyline’s engine.

They did all express surprise at the fact that the car only has the 2 big cats near the engine, as that is contrary to most other audi exhaust systems.

I think once I get my car tuned and upgraded I’m going to be able to garner a fair bit of interest in my community.

This is why I like seeing so many new guys here. from what I keep reading the 3.0 comunity has few people that care and even more that are just guessing when they give answers. The same is true for the S5 as well.

Im excited to see how your tune works out. My tune was great. I got stage 1 and even with that it was better then my old giac by a long shot.

Well I might be down for the time being, but someone on AZ is dropping their 3.0 off at JHM tomorrow to get things sped up! Progress is goood ;D

Thats great. Are they on here. It might not be a bad idea to have them come over here. If you ask me the first few 3.0 guys that do well are going to get flamed by the 1.8T guys. So I would really like to hear more about it and not have to read 50 1.8T guys shove there opinion in

whaddup guys (and gals). was sent over here from az. read all the 3.0 things on here, and let me tell you it is WAY NICER on here. Im mike, JHM currently has my b6 for their version of r&ding possible upgrades along with developing the tune.

i cant wait to see all the great things this car has potential for! this is my first audi (bought in nov 2010) and love it. now it just needs some more go!

look forward to updating you guys as i can. however, i don’t want to rain on JHMs parade, so ill share what i can with you guys!

look forward to making this thing get rollin!
